Caring doesn't cost yet the rewards can be invaluable. Be selfish, say yes to helping others.

Whether you believe global warming is genuine and it is due to the actions of humankind is a big discussion, however, taking steps to ensure our local environment is protected and ensuring we reduce waste as a council and as individuals should not be something that needs to up for discussion - it must happen.

I mention just four examples, but the no cost/low cost measures are simple to implement.

"A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people."

Franklin D. Roosevelt

“We generate our own environment. We get exactly what we deserve. How can we resent a life we've created ourselves? Who's to blame, who's to credit but us? Who can change it, anytime we wish, but us?”

Richard Bach - 1936

"To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them."

Theodore Roosevelt

“Our environmental problems originate in the hubris of imagining ourselves as the central nervous system or the brain of nature. We're not the brain, we are a cancer on nature.”

Dave Foreman

“We're in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyones arguing over where they're going to sit.”

Marshall McLuhan

"We shall never understand the natural environment until we see it as a living organism. Land can be healthy or sick, fertile or barren, rich or poor, lovingly nurtured or bled white. Our present attitudes and laws governing the ownership and use of land represent an abuse of the concept of private property.... Today you can murder land for private profit. You can leave the corpse for all to see and nobody calls the cops."

Paul Brooks

"Most of us are familiar with recycle and reusing, but how often do we think of the third R - REDUCE? 'Reduce' is probably the most important of the three Rs because, if we reduced, it would limit the need to recycle and reuse."

Catherine Pulsifer

The video on the left is a trailer from a film called The End of the Line. If you haven't seen it yet I recommend it highly. For people who may not give much thought to the sea, especially as Bermondsey isn't close to the coast, the film is a prime example of corporate greed above real community benefits. If the seas are overfished the corporates will move on, but coastal communities would have a devastating impact forced upon them.

The video on the right uses a trawling analogy for the destruction and waste of land and the creatures, plants and trees that live upon the land. It is a clever video and is comparing the waste associated with trawling in the sea and the waste of the destruction of land.

"In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York. Stopping the loggers is the fastest and cheapest solution to climate change."

Daniel Howden

“Our hamburgers, made from the flesh of chemically impregnated cattle, had been broiled over counterfeit charcoal, placed between slices of artificially flavored cardboard and served to us by recycled juvenile delinquents”

Jean Michel Chapereau
